Sewer Line Descaling

Sewer Line Descaling

Get the diameter back before you spend money replacing the pipe.

A large share of the housing stock in Montgomery and Prince George’s County was built when cast iron was the standard for drain and sewer piping. Cast iron does not fail all at once. It corrodes from the inside, and the corrosion builds outward in rough layers of rust and mineral deposit called tuberculation. Over decades a four-inch line can lose a substantial share of its usable diameter to buildup that has nothing to do with what anyone flushed.

Descaling removes that buildup mechanically. Chain knockers and specialised cutting heads are driven down the line to strip the pipe wall back toward bare metal, followed by jetting to flush out everything knocked loose. The result is measured in restored diameter, and homeowners typically notice the difference in flow immediately.

Descaling is also the honest first question to ask before agreeing to a replacement quote. Not every old pipe needs replacing. Plenty of cast iron lines are structurally fine and simply choked. Camera the line, descale it, and camera it again — if the pipe underneath is sound, you have just avoided a five-figure job. If it is not, you now know that for a fact instead of on someone’s say-so.

Signs you need this

  • A home built before roughly 1980 with original cast iron drain lines
  • Chronically sluggish drains that cabling never fully resolves
  • Rust-coloured or gritty debris appearing in fixtures
  • A camera inspection showing rough, narrowed pipe walls
  • You have been quoted a full replacement and want a second opinion first

How we do it

  1. 01

    Camera

Assess how much of the narrowing is scale versus actual structural loss.

  2. 02

    Descale

Chain knockers strip tuberculation from the pipe wall back toward bare metal.

  3. 03

    Flush

Jetting carries the loosened scale out rather than leaving it to re-block the line.

  4. 04

    Re-camera

Before-and-after footage, so the restored diameter is something you can see.

Sewer Line Descaling — common questions

It is the mechanical removal of hardened rust, mineral scale and tuberculation from the inside wall of cast iron or clay pipe. Chain knockers strip the buildup and hydro jetting flushes it out, restoring the pipe toward its original inside diameter without replacing it.
