When homeowners compare sewer repair quotes, they usually compare the plumbing numbers. That is understandable and it is also how people end up surprised, because on a lot of properties the plumbing is the smaller half of what an open-cut replacement actually costs.
The three methods, briefly
Open-cut (traditional) replacement
A trench is excavated along the length of the sewer line, the old pipe is removed, new pipe is laid, and the trench is backfilled. It is the oldest method, it works on any pipe in any condition, and it is the only option when a line needs rerouting entirely.
Trenchless lining (CIPP)
A resin-saturated liner is drawn into the existing pipe through an access point, inflated against the pipe wall and cured in place, forming a jointless pipe inside the old one. It requires a host pipe that is still structurally present and reasonably round.
Pipe bursting
A bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, fracturing it outward into the soil while drawing a new seamless HDPE line in behind it. It needs two access pits rather than a full trench, works on collapsed pipe, and allows upsizing.
The cost comparison nobody puts in the quote
Take a fairly ordinary Maryland scenario: a sixty-foot lateral running from the house, under a section of driveway, across lawn with two mature trees near the run, to the connection at the street.
Open-cut on that property does not just cost the excavation and the pipe. It costs the driveway section that has to be cut out and repoured. It costs the lawn along the entire trench. It costs the landscaping in the way. And if the trench passes through the root plate of one of those trees, it may eventually cost the tree — which on an established property is not a small number and cannot be bought back at any price.
Trenchless lining on the same property works through the existing cleanout. The driveway stays intact. The lawn stays intact. The trees stay intact. The restoration line item that dominates the open-cut bill largely disappears.
When open-cut is still the right answer
Trenchless is not universally better and anyone who tells you it is has stopped diagnosing. Open-cut remains correct when:
- The line needs rerouting rather than restoring — a new path, not a new pipe on the old path.
- The existing line has severe bellies, since lining a sag preserves the sag and the standing water with it.
- The damage is a single accessible spot near the surface, where a short dig is genuinely the cheaper repair.
- Access constraints make it impossible to get equipment to a viable entry and exit point.
How to compare quotes properly
- Insist on camera footage before any quote. A price given without an inspection is a guess with a number attached.
- Ask what the quote includes for restoration. Get it in writing — this is where the difference between two apparently similar numbers usually hides.
- Ask why that method was chosen for your pipe specifically. There should be a reason grounded in what the camera showed.
- Ask what the warranty covers and for how long. Sewer line work should carry meaningful coverage.
- Ask about permits, since sewer lateral work here falls under WSSC jurisdiction and permitting affects your schedule.
We quote both methods where both are viable, and we will tell you plainly when open-cut is the better value for your property. Camera inspection comes first either way — including when the honest finding is that your line does not need the work someone else proposed.
