When lining is right

Lining is the answer when the pipe is damaged but has kept its shape. Cracks, root intrusion at joints, corroded-but-intact cast iron, minor offsets — these are all conditions where there is still a pipe to cure against.

This describes the majority of failing laterals in older Montgomery and Prince George’s County neighbourhoods. Clay pipe under Chevy Chase and Takoma Park usually fails at the joints while the barrel sections remain sound. That is a lining job.

When bursting is right

Bursting is the answer when there is not enough pipe left to work with, or when the pipe that is there is the wrong size.

A collapsed section, a line crushed by ground movement, cast iron that has corroded through along the bottom, or a lateral that is simply undersized for a home that has gained bathrooms — none of those are fixable by lining, and all of them are ordinary bursting jobs.

The belly problem

This deserves its own section because it is the single most common reason a lining job goes wrong.

A belly is a low section where the pipe has sagged and now holds standing water. Waste slows there, solids settle, and the line clogs on a cycle no amount of cleaning ends.

A liner cures inside the shape it finds. Line a bellied pipe and you get a smooth, watertight, perfectly sealed sag — the leak is fixed and the actual problem is untouched. The line will keep clogging, and now it has a liner in it.

What about cost?

Bursting generally carries a higher per-foot rate than lining, because it involves excavation, new pipe material and heavier equipment. But comparing the two on price is usually the wrong exercise — in most cases only one of them is technically appropriate for your pipe.

How the decision actually gets made
